An invention recently recognized in the Innovation Countdown 2030 compiled by public health and innovation non-profit PATH, a portable automated chlorinator, can save millions of children which are currently dying from water-related diseases, notably diarrhoea.
This new invention is smaller than a bedside nightstand and is aimed at providing developing countries with clean water. The chlorinator fits onto community taps and hand pumps and is capable of automatically producing up to 8,000 litres of water drinkable before needing a refill.
Zimba Batch Chlorinator Could Save 1.5 Million Children
Zimba’s automated chlorinator has no easily breakable moving parts, and does not require electricity, which makes it perfect for use in far-flung rural areas where electricity is in short supply.
The chlorinator has already been tested in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal and according to experts is capable of saving in excess of 1.5 million children’s lives between 2015 and 2030.
The chlorinator is essentially a large box that is a bit thinner but around the same height as a nightstand and is preloaded with chlorine. It can easily be fitted to most water sources, such as hand-pumps and taps within around 30 minutes.
The correct amount of sodium hypochlorite solution (basically bleach) is released by the pressure of the incoming water, and rids the water of harmful microorganisms so that the water that flows out of the tap is freshly chlorinated and potable.
This small-scale water treatment device, developed in India, is a rugged device that is geared to easily automatically chlorinate water, and provide some of the 650 million people globally who do not have access to safe water. One third of the world’s population do not have access to adequate sanitation either and this causes in excess of the death of 1,400 children a day.
One of the best things about this chlorinator is that, unlike traditional ways of chlorinating water with tablets, which most people forget to follow through with, the chlorination here is automatic. Zimba’s automated chlorinator is being lauded as one of the 8 innovations that will transform global health by 2030.
