Power generation growth in China has exponentially increased national dependence on coal to provide a portion of the power needs, which has driven the establishment of new regulations regarding environmental controls and water treatment, including the regulation of power plant wastewater discharge.
Amid all these new regulations, the Huaneng Group, which is China’s largest power producer, just finalised its plans to construct a state-of-the-art ultra-supercritical coal fired power plant at the Changxing Power Station in Zhejiang Province, and it includes a new wastewater treatment plant.
World’s First Forward Osmosis-Based Zero Liquid Discharge Application
This new plant, which will be the world’s first commercial application of Forward Osmosis-based ZLD, will be delivered by Beijing Woteer.
This forward osmosis-based ZLD is an innovative desalination method that was pioneered by Oasys Water, which has provided its Membrane Brine Concentrator (MBC) system and pre-concentrating reverse osmosis (RO) for the system; Beijing Woteer supplied physic-chemical, filtration and ion exchange pre-treatment.
The ZLD process flow has been designed on projected water quality data as the wastewater treatment plant was built with the new facility and not a retrofit, and has the ability to a variety of waters across a wide range of hardness, alkalinity and total dissolved solids (TDS).
The system has been optimised for stable performance over an anticipated wide range of water quality and flow conditions, including complete softening of the FGD wastewater; the ability to produce stable brine TDS, allowing flow and overall recovery to float as needed, and a maximised turndown ratio.
The technology allows for the desalination of the coal-fired power plant’s wastewater for reuse in the boiler feed-water loop, to reduce intake of local surface water and outflow of industrial wastewater.
The project has enabled an innovative FO based brine concentration and water reuse process to treat desulphurisation wastewater while serving as a reference for other power producers at the same time, as environmental and water regulations in China continue to mount.
