Our bodies consist of around 70% water, but cannot store water, so we need to constantly replenish the water that we lose via sweating, urination, and various other bodily functions. If we do not drink sufficient water on a daily basis we will become dehydrated and the will prevent our bodies from operating optimally and could also create various health problems.
We all need to drink water throughout the day to maintain hydration levels, but contrary to popular belief, there is no general recommended daily allowance for water consumption. The amount of water that you need to drink every day will depend on your own personal circumstances, which include your age, gender, body weight, climate, physical exertion, general health etc.
Water is everywhere in our bodies, spread throughout it in every cell; the brain is 75% water; the blood is 92% water; the bones are 22% water; muscles 75%, and there is water in each cell as well as on the outside. Water also lubricates and cushions our joints so that they do not get injured by being bumped or rubbing against each other.
It does not take much for the human body to become dehydrated; in actual fact as little as a 2% drop in your water levels will cause partial dehydration. The more dehydrated you become the more the negative effects are on your body, including:
-
Allergies: Dehydration restricts the airways causing an increase in the histamine produced by the body, which could lead to allergies;
-
Blood Pressure: The blood is about 92% water. Insufficient water intake will cause the blood to thicken, making it difficult for the blood to flow, thereby elevating the blood pressure;
-
Colon: The body protects vital cells and organs by pulling water from non-essential areas such as the colon when dehydrated, causing constipation;
-
Digestion: Drinking too little water means the body gets less alkaline minerals like calcium and magnesium, which can result in digestive problems like acid reflux and gastritis;
-
Joints: Dehydration causes the joints to dry up and become stiff and painful;
-
Kidneys and Bladder: Dehydration leads to a build-up of acid waste and toxins in which bacteria will thrive, leading to inflammation, pain and infection;
If you do not drink water regularly it will also lead to dry skin, and can lead to stroke, cancer and various other diseases too, so make sure that you drink water regularly throughout the day, every day.
