Why is Water So Important for My Body? Many individuals think that one just needs to drink water so that the kidneys can process the toxins out of the body, but while that is true, there is so much more that your body does with water and actually could not do if it does not have sufficient water.

You must drink water regularly, not only when you feel thirsty or when you have been exercising or outside in the hot sun; if you don’t you will become dehydrated and that is not good for your overall health.

Why is Water So Important for My Body?

Water is essential for many of the body’s processes, and although the old “drink 8 glasses of water a day” has been disproved as just a misunderstanding, according to the  Institute of Medicine, men need around 3 litres of liquid per day and women around 2 litres (some of this can be gleaned from fruit and veg and other liquids).

Here are some of the ways your body uses the water it so desperately needs:

  • Brain: Your brain uses water to keep your memory sharp, cognitive thought processes, your motivation intact, and your mood stable. When your brain is deprived of water reduces oxygen flow to the brain is reduced and neurons are temporarily shrunk.
  • Bloodstream: Your body has a method of keeping itself cool; it releases heat by expanding blood vessels near to the surface of the skin, which causes you to sweat, thereby cooling yourself down. If there is too little water in your bloodstream it takes longer to trigger these blood vessels so you stay hot.
  • Heart: The heart pumps all the blood delivering oxygen and nutrients throughout your body; when there is insufficient water in your blood it cannot move freely and this means that the heart has to work harder to pump that blood, and it is more difficult to deliver oxygen to the various cells, making it more difficult to perform simple everyday tasks like walking up stairs or a hill, or even exercising.
  • Limbs: Water is necessary to protect and lubricate your joints as well as make your muscles work. When you do not drink sufficient water your joints cannot move easily and could get damaged and your muscles will cramp sue to muscle fatigue.
  • Kidneys: Your kidneys need water to filter waste and toxins from your blood which are excreted in the form of urine.

Drinking water regularly also keeps your skin plump, firm and younger looking and keeps your mouth, throat and lips moist.
