Children are notoriously not fond of drinking water, especially not when there are more interesting alternatives such as juice and carbonated drinks. Unfortunately this is not healthy as carbonated drinks are not good for children, mainly due to the high sugar content, and many so-called fresh fruit juices are the same as they do not contain much fruit at all.
Children are extremely active most of the time, which means that they are constantly losing body fluids that need to be replaced. Whereas an adult’s body is approximately 70% water, a child’s body is closer to 85% water. There is water in every single cell in the body and it is vital that this balance remain constant because water is needed by every single cell in the body to grow and to work effectively.
Why is it Important for My Child to Drink Water?
If you are asking that question, imagine what your child is thinking. They just know that they get thirsty and a soda takes the thirst away and tastes great too, so why can’t they just drink sodas; why do they need to drink water that basically tastes yuck?
Teaching your child to drink more water is a simple as telling them why their body needs water and why sodas will not do the same job.
Most of their body consists of water which it loses when they run around and play and sweat, when they cry, and even when they breathe. Every little cell in their body has water in it and needs this water so that they can grow big and strong like Mommy and Daddy.
Explain to them that without it they would not be alive, and that their body uses the water for various things:
- Drinking water regularly keeps their blood thin enough so that it can transport all the food that they eat and the oxygen that they breathe in to the different parts of their body so it works properly and grows;
- The food we eat is like the petrol we put into our cars to make them go. When we do not drink enough water, the body cannot turn this food into energy and we will not be able to run around and play;
- When we get sick it is because the lymph system, which is part of our immune system (our body’s army), cannot fight the invading germs. Drinking water will help our body do this;
- Drinking water helps the body to get rid of all the stuff it doesn’t need and keeps it healthy. The water you drink helps the body to move some of this bad stuff to your kidneys so that you can get rid of it when you wee, and the rest of the stuff your body does not need goes to the stomach then to your colon, where it is turned into poo. When you struggle to poo it is because you have not had enough water to drink and the poo cannot move easily;
- Drinking water helps you to keep your body at the right temperature so that you do not get too hot, because then you have no energy and cannot play;
- The reason that you can run around and play and throw a ball and lift things is because of the joints in your ankles, knees, shoulders and elbows. These joints are surrounded with water, which keeps them from becoming injured when you fall or bump them and helps them to work properly; and
- In order to grow big and strong and tall, you need to drink water so that your muscles can grow.
One easy way to get your children to drink more water is to buy a water cooler; they love the fact that they can get themselves nice icy cold water without having to life a heavy container out of the fridge, and there will always be enough chilled water left for you as there is no need to refill a container with water and put it back into the fridge, which most children forget to do.
