Resource limitations around the world mean we all need to consider how we use them. Effective resource use comprises the best, most profitable way to use resources, to obtain beneficial results; this means using resources in a way that they’re not wasted.
Companies – especially big brands – are more responsible than most in how they manage their resource use, since they use up much more than the average individual.
Water is a resource that matters sometimes more so than even oil. Before we even used oil, our ancestors were using water; all life needs it. Managing water, its use and its security then is not merely about our species but others. Thus, businesses, because they have a greater impact than us as individuals must, do and should care and manage security efforts when it comes to this precious resource.
Corporations by definitions have a higher chance of obtaining better land than, say, small farmers due to their larger budgets. Again: with greater acquisition comes greater responsibility to surrounding resources.
Further, areas where businesses set up don’t operate in a vacuum. Oil spills are a good example of this: it’s not only BP that is struck (as it were) by the failure of their technology. But water delivery to surrounding seas, creatures, people and the market were hit, too. Similarly, businesses with prime positions atop rivers and so forth could taint the supply to surrounding farmlands, kill creatures and so on.
Recognising that none of us operate in a vacuum – whether as a small farmer or a major business – will help us operate better. However, many can simply ignore that they’re hurting other people and businesses.
Businesses should recognise that there is also a profit-motive involved. People are more likely to support and invest in businesses that care about them. This is an obvious, but sometimes, overlooked fact. One way Living Water looks after not just their clients but also the world is by caring about how we use water and what we’re doing to protect that resource.
