Israel is known for many things. It is known as a country of war, religion and as one of the countries that appear the most in the news.
It’s, however, not only the ongoing quarrel of the country with its “outsidersâ€, or as some would put it, outcasts, that’s reached the news lately, but rather the matter of its water supply, along with its access to sanitation.
Wherever there’s war, a country sure doesn’t ever have it easy.
Israel’s water supply and sanitation facilities are as historical as the country itself, as it is connected to historical developments within the country.
Since rainfall can only be expected in the winter months, and mostly just reaches northern Israel, water engineering forms a vital part of the country’s ability to thrive. Ensuring water irrigation systems are in place, along with adequate water supply is equally important, as it adds to the economic survival of an entire nation.
Where is the water?
Given that it only rains during the winter months in Israel, it easy to think that there’s a lack of water in the country, but that is not entirely true.
One of their biggest innovations, is desalinating seawater, which provides enough water for the residents of Israel, should they not have enough water as a result of less rainfall.
Desalinating seawater is one of the biggest projects in the country. They are also well educated on directing water from reservoirs and rivers to their homes and make the most out of groundwater resources. In addition, they collect excess water from floods.
An institution, the National Water Carrier, carries water from the countries largest freshwater lake, also referred to as the Sea of Galilee, where it meets the various pipes, channels and tunnels in the Northern Negev desert. The Israelis have mastered the water supply within their country.
