By now I think most people are aware of the dangers of chlorine, used to sanitise drinking water and fluoride, used in the drinking water in many countries to promote dental health hold for us, but what other toxins are lurking in your tap water?
While governments the world over swear to us that they abide strictly to rules and regulations laid down by The World Health Organisation (WHO) and various other local water regulatory bodies, I have stopped trusting my health to governments.
Many governments still use fluoride, and on top of that, sodium fluoride, in the drinking water supposedly to promote good dental health when the opposite has been proven by numerous studies and this type of water treatment has been outlawed in countries such as Denmark, Holland and Sweden because sodium fluoride contains too many heavy metals. Why then should I trust a government that insists on using something that could damage my immune system and cause cancer or inhibit thyroid function to provide my drinking water?
What Health Hazards do Toxins in Tap Water Hold?
Apart from the above-mentioned toxins, your drinking water may well contain many other toxic substances of which most individuals are unaware and which are dangerous to your health.
The toxins that can be found in your drinking water include:
Aluminium
Aluminium can be found in the drinking water in many countries who add it to the water to clarify it. Studies have found that aluminium that is ingested via drinking water and various other sources is a major contributory factor to Alzheimer´s disease. According to a study published in the prestigious peer-reviewed journal Brain Research, aluminium is a potent neurotoxin and when it reacts with the fluoride in the water it causes more aluminium to cross the blood-brain barrier; this aluminium then becomes deposited in the brain. Aluminium has also been implicated as contributing to the initiation of cancer.
Other Metals
Mercury, lead and copper from old pipes and various other sources also often contaminate the drinking water, inhibiting zinc uptake in the body, which can lead to inhibition of the effectiveness of vitamin C to protect against prostate cancer.
Arsenic
Even very low levels of arsenic that can seep into the soil from natural sources such as agriculture and industrial waste, and make its way into the drinking water, can be linked to cancer, according to the National Academy of Sciences.
Nitrates and Nitrites
Nitrate, common in rural areas, has been linked to bladder cancer in women and to colon and bladder cancers. Studies in various countries have also shown that high nitrite levels, especially in conjunction with low vitamin C levels, are linked to brain, oesophageal and stomach cancers.
