Water UK Advises Children Must Drink More Water for Dental HealthAccording to a recent Local Government Association report, the cost of removing children’s teeth in the UK has risen by a shocking 61% over the past five years and now costs in the region of £35 million per annum. While this amount sounds rather high, according to the latest data, in England alone, there are in excess of one hundred operations to remove decayed teeth in children and teenagers every single day.

According to the NHS, around 40% of the average teenager’s sugar intake consists of soft drinks which are generally loaded with sugar, and it suggests that children should be encouraged to drink more water instead of carbonated and other sugary drinks.

I must say that I for one am surprised by these statistics, as although I realise that youngsters today do have too much of a choice of basically unhealthy drinks from which to choose, surely at least some of them are drinking water regularly. If this is the case, what about all the fluoride that the government puts in the drinking water to safeguard this?

We are told daily that the water in the UK is so safe to drink, and that the carcinogenic fluoride that is added to the water is done so in order to improve the dental health of those, specifically young children and teenagers, as many families cannot afford to go to the dentist. If this is so, why is there still such a dental problem in the UK, and will drinking more tap water not just make this worse? Fluoride can cause stained and pitted teeth when imbibed over a length of time, and then it has also been linked to various cancers, specifically bone cancer in young boys.

I will most definitely not recommend that any young children or teenagers drink more tap water – what I will do, and what I encourage all parents to do is to invest in a watercooler with a good filter that will filter out any toxins. In my experience, having a mains water filter encourages children to drink more water because the water tastes so much better from a water cooler, and it is chilled too.
