Cleaner Water Award
Dr Mike Horner, an old boy from the same school (Giggleswick) in North Yorkshire as Guy Florin, Living-Water’s Managing Director, always had a passion for the river Ribble and used to fish on the school “pool†just above the dairy/dreamery.
Since retiring, Mike has been heavily involved in river and water environmental matters at local and national level.
Having worked hard on a project to restore flow to two rivers heavily abstracted to dryness in summer periods and got no where for ten years, to revitalize it, Dr. Horner gave a presentation to Lord Chris Smith of Finsbury, Chairman of the Environment Agency. To his amazment, shortly afterwards he received a telephone call from the Environment Agency telling him the project had been short listed for a national environment award!!
“cleaner water awardâ€: An organisation that has achieved outstanding results in preventing or improving water quality in rivers, seas or lakes and is entitled “Brennand and Whitendale Environmental Improvement (Lancarshire).
The winner of the award was Sun Salads Ltd – Improving the quality and Cleanliness of water (Cranborne, Dorset). The joint runner up with Dr. Horners project was Axminster Carpets Ltd (Yarn division) – Effluent Treatment and water Recycling (Axminster, Devon)
Energy Secreatary Chris Huhne MP, who presented the awards at the Environment Agency’s annual conference “environment 10†in London, praised the caliber of all the finalists, especially the winners.
Guy Florin adds â€I am so happy that an old Giggleswickean School boy has taken such an interest in water. We are all attracted to the water industry for different reasons, in Dr. Horners case it was seeing the river Ribble every day, whereas in my own it was the realization why drink water and all the health benefits of drinking water
