‘Water on the brain’. This is both a term and definition that is used to describe the medical term ‘hydrocephalus’.

Hydrocephalus is a condition of fluid build up in the skill that causes the brain to swell that could potentially result in brain damage. This fluid builds up can cause physical, intellectual, as well as developmental problems in the body and brain and in order to prevent even more serious complications, one must treat it accordingly.

This condition occurs in mainly children and elderly adults that are 60 and above. According to medical research, 1 to 2 babies out of a 1,000 is born with hydrocephalus.

The Causes of Hydrocephalus

The main cause of this condition is a fluid called cerebrospinal fluid which naturally flows through both the brain and spinal cord. It starts getting dangerous once the fluid increases, which is caused by the brain producing excess amounts of it, blockages that prevent the fluid from flowing in a normal manner and a decrease in the absorption from blood vessels.

This fluid is mostly comprised out of water, hence its name. Too much of CSF will put the brain under too much pressure which could cause brain selling and ultimately, brain damage.

More causes, particularly in babies, are caused by a birth defect which occurs when the spinal column cannot close, genetic abnormalities, as well as infections that may occur during pregnancy.

‘Water on the brain’ is not only reserved for babies and can also occur in toddlers and older children due to head trauma, tumours in the central nervous system, injuries during birth, bleeding in the brain which mostly occurs in premature babies, as well as infections such as meningitis.

Hydrocephalus/ ‘water on the brain’ is a very serious condition and one that should not, at any age, be taken lightly.
