In one drop of water are found all the secrets of the oceans
~ Khalil Gibran ~
Water covers in excess of 70% of the surface of planet earth, and makes up nearly 70% of our bodies; it is the forger of valleys, the keeper of the rhythm, the bearer of sustenance, and the seat of energy – water is life!
Water is the holder, the protector and bestower of life; it is forms in tiny ice crystals high up on the mountain tops and fills the deepest crevices of oceans; it flows through valleys, goes around obstacles, cleanses and revives, and refreshes and awakens us. Water carries sound and vibrations over long distances and the songs of the whales and murmurings of the dolphins to our human ears.
Many ancient and modern cultures revere water as a vital, life-giving force, treating it with the reverence it deserves and looking to it for sustenance, healing and the wisdom of the ages.
Unfortunately more people just treat water as something that is always there and have just used it as a repository for all kinds of waste and toxins, assuming that this natural resource will just always be available. It is unfortunately the actions of these individuals that are killing this resource of ours, making it unsafe for human and animal life.
The world population has exploded and the current 750 million people across the globe are severely stretching the available potable freshwater resources. Many communities across the globe however do not have access to potable water or hygienic sanitation and around 840,000 people, most of them children, die annually from water-related diseases such as diarrhoea.
The toxins in our water sources, even in our tap water, the overuse of our groundwater resources and other challenges facing our planets’ most vital resource sometimes seem insurmountable, but fortunately there are those who have taken this cause on and who are championing the healing of our planet’s water.
One of the ways in which you can put your vision for our water into action is to join in on the many events and initiatives taking place on World Water Day, 22 March, across the globe. Water activists in the form of captains of industry, representatives from NGOs, foundations and international bodies, political luminaries, leaders of the world’s many religions, and renowned entertainers are all coming together, committed to creating a world in which every single human has access to potable drinking water, sanitation and hygiene.
