The most feared species living in the ocean is the shark. It doesn’t necessarily even matter what kind of shark. People have always feared every species of sharks.
They are known as apex predators and have a complex to kill whatever comes their way, or at least that’s what movies tell us. Being described as a feared apex predator, sharks form an import part of the ocean’s ecosystem. They help maintain a proper balance in nature, by reducing certain populations of fish and aquatic animals.
Although they do bite humans, they don’t necessarily always attach humans with the idea of having a meal. Occasionally they grab onto humans by mistake or attack them to protect their habitat, as they are classified as the dominant predators of the ocean.
With an average of 80 unprovoked shark attacks on humans a year, which results in 6 deaths, they attack very few humans in comparison to animals that live on land. However, entering their turf could place your life in danger, which is why you should always remain cautious and do anything you can to prevent an encounter or attack.
Tips on preventing a shark attack or encounter
- Swim in a group.
- Don’t swim in dark water, as they mostly come out at night.
- Don’t swim with a wound of any kind.

- Avoid water where fishing takes place, or where there might be bait in the waters.
- Don’t wear bright coloured clothing, or something that contrasts.
- Don’t wear jewellery.

- Don’t enter the water if sharks are present in them whatsoever.
