Madagascar. Probably best known the animated movie or the country, or rather island, that is located East of the African continent. Surrounded by tons of sea water, it is an island that the world hasn’t provided much attention to and with its population of just over 24 million residents, every passing day as the population increases, the water struggle becomes worse.
Getting up before dawn each day in the town of Antananarivo, the residents of the beautiful island of Madagascar prepare their cans and places them in a neat and tidy row at the water pump to receive their water for the day. For the majority, their day consists of waiting for water and carrying it home to do basic activities such as bathe, make food and clean their clothes and dishes.
Most important, they use this water to drink from to be able to survive. Their daily efforts to obtain water is a struggle and due to climate change and severe drought has in recent years become even worse.
Water, the source of life that’s being taken for granted.
Along with extreme poverty, you could just imagine what having no access to tap water and proper sanitation is like for the Madagascan communities. Implementing proper taps to be able to receive tap water from home is a considered a luxury in Madagascar and a dream few can own as reality.
The water pump they use to collect water from provides a mere 40 litres a day which should be carried from far to their homes to be able to make it through the day and while the people of Madagascar endure a struggle each day, we as a global nation together, must work harder to save as much water as we can to ensure this crisis from not getting worse globally.
Madagascar is one of 60% of countries worldwide that are experiencing a water crisis.
