As one of the countries that have the highest risk of its tap water running dry, Shimla, along with other cities such as Sao Paolo, Cape Town and Jakarta are also struggling with water conditions, which seems to be getting worse and unpredictable moving forward.
Shimla, situated in the northern state, Himachal Pradesh, is the latest city to make the list of Indian cities and regions to have little to no running water.
The residents of Shimla wen days without water and many lined up with buckets and containers to collect enough water for drinking and daily activities from the tankers provided by the government.
The water situation got worse the week after, which forced schools to be closed for an entire week, all while the government permitted tourists to rather stay away, as this was a critical time for the city.
The Water Shortage Affecting More Than One City, State and Country
Amongst all its poverty, you’d think that India can’t afford one more crisis, especially, when it comes to something as important as water. There have been many ongoing disputes about who has access to which rivers, as well as how much water people from different states in India are allowed.
The same goes for India dealing with Bangladesh and Pakistan, over any water usage in the region.
Why is There a Water Shortage?
Although citizens of countries with the same problem would like to blame the weather alone, it’s the governments of these countries/ states, which haven’t taken not, or do anything to ensure proper water resources in their countries.
Water resources in India have been mismanaged for decades. Apart from that, the change in climate, as well as weather patterns, have affected precipitation and everyday conditions altogether.
With India’s dependence on agriculture to survive, forming one of the most critical parts of their economy, the idea of a future of India being without water is rather unsettling. The same goes for the fact that this industry employs up to 800 million citizens, meaning restrictions to water, will result in millions of job losses too.
