Due to temperatures rising, which has a massive impact on global warming, and the existence of many different things on our earth, islands over the world have sunk or are currently sinking.
According to a study conducted by NASA, researchers predict that some island is locked into about three feet of a rise in sea level. This number will undoubtedly increase within the next century, which won’t only leave islands underwater, but also tens to hundreds of thousands of individuals, without their nation and nowhere to go.
Islands at Risk of Sinking
#1 The Marshall Islands
If you’re familiar with the surroundings Hawaii and Australia, then you know about the Marshall Islands, which is located halfway between these two destinations.
The Marshall Islands have a population of over 70,000 and have already been severely impacted by a rise in sea level. These islands are already experiencing tidal flooding, as they are only 6 feet above seawater level.
#2 The Tuvalu Island
Located in the South Pacific, the Tuvalu island is said to sink within the next five decades. Back in 2002, the island has already threatened to sue both the U.S. and Australia, for an increase in greenhouse gasses which lead their island to sink.
#3 The Tonga Island
The Tonga island is situated in the Southern Pacific Ocean and has a population of 90,000 people, all of whom live on the coastline of the island. This population is very vulnerable to an increase in water levels. The residents living on the island have no plan as to where they would go when the island sinks.
#4 The Cook Islands
These islands are a string of 15 small islands, located off the north-eastern coast of New Zealand. While the residents fear for their islands’ existence, a Pacific Regional Environment Program is already set in place to prepare for any shift in weather pattern changes, as the seawater level continues to rise.
