While there are many different types of water pollution, because of the mere fact that water is derived from many different sources, pollution and the acts of man not only affects the ocean and the rivers we drink from.

Types of Water Pollution in Different Types of Water Sources

Surface Water Pollution

This type of water pollution is found in rivers, lakes, oceans and lagoons. Surface water can be described as water that includes natural water that is found on the surface of the earth. Whenever hazardous substances mixes with this type of water, pollution is caused.

Nutrients Pollution

This pollution occurs when wastewater, sewage and fertilizers contain higher levels of nutrients. If ever it ends up in water bodies, it allows for weeds and algae to grow which ultimately makes the water undrinkable. The effects of too much algae in the water could also cause all the oxygen to be used up and kill other organisms like fish.

Oxygen Depletion

Water bodies contain micro-organisms and when biodegradable matter is present in the water, more microorganism growth is encouraged, and more oxygen is used up in the water. This allows for an entire process of killing aerobic organisms and produce more anaerobic organisms.

Microbiological

Due to the amount of people that drink water either straight from a stream or river, sometimes natural pollution may occur that causes microorganisms such as viruses, protozoa and bacteria to appear. This could cause serious illnesses when consumed by both people and animals.

Ground Water Pollution

Whenever pesticides, fertilizers and chemicals are applied to plants, these enter the soils and are washed into the ground when it rains. This could cause pollution underground and when we extract this type of water, that is the reason why water must be checked.
