Could you imagine an iceberg over five times the size of Manhattan, breaking away from a continent, Antarctica, into the ocean? No wonder sea levels have risen over the past few decades, apart from the sun heating up the earth more than ever that is.
Many people believe that Antarctica is sending the world a message. Referred to as B-46, yes, the iceberg has a name, the iceberg has already fragmented, leaving it drifting in the ocean.
The iceberg is over 115 miles from Pine Island Glacier. It’s breakaway from the continent, Antarctica is considered quite phenomenal, and scary.
The iceberg has reportedly broken due to an internal crack in the ice, which leaves experts predicting that this is one of the first of many more pieces to break off and venture into the ocean.
Pine Island Glacier is the fastest melting part of the Southern Pole and pushes more than 45-billion tons of water into the ocean annually.
There’s more to come
It won’t stop here. There are a lot more cracks predicted to occur within the next few years, and there’s nothing we can do about it.
This has been one of the biggest breaks of ice from Pine Glacier Island and has also been the third time ice has broken away from the island in the past two years.
Although scientists and climate activists aren’t concerned of the size of the iceberg that broke away from the island, they are concerned about the progressive breaks of ice, which seems to increase in the Southern part of Antarctica, as time goes by.
It’s no doubt that Antarctica is undergoing a massive change. In fact, it might be one of the biggest in history, and with global warming on the incline, sea levels are expected to rise, even more, leaving the shallowest of islands under water within at least the next decade.
