Known for being one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations, Rome has found itself struggling to manage adequate water supply to all the city’s residents and thousands of tourists visiting each year.
Due to a lack of rain over the past 18 months, the city has tried to rectify the problem, making a significant effort to save water as much as possible.
The city’s water company area has stated that it’s managed to fix 1,300 water leaks in 2017, which has added to the problem of the city losing water.
The city’s drought, although not as bad as countries like Yemen, Somalia and Sao Paolo, still need to consider making drastic measures, to ensure the city’s prominent future.
The City’s Effort to Help Support the City During the Drought
Rome has been described as facing an “extraordinary drought” the past few years, with rainfall declining and remaining 70% for the past four years. For this reason, residents have been threatened by the government to cut back on water and has even resulted in switching off hundreds of fountains, which are being misused throughout the city.
Some lake’s water usage has also been limited, to ensure the conservation of water. Apart from Rome, the rest of Italy, along with Southern countries in Europe, are experiencing a similar problem.
Water services are also being analyzed for improvement. The water company in Italy has made an incredible effort to check 4,700 kilometers, which includes 90% of the water network in Rome, for leaks. The water company is dedicated to fixing all leaks and monitoring the usage of water in the city, to ensure that water levels are maintained and hopefully, restore itself.
Should Rome not be able to restore its water levels, an outbreak of illness may also occur, along with reduced tourism.
