By now everyone should know that water is important for our survival, and that the human body cannot survive without it. We have all heard the lectures that we need to drink plenty of water throughout the day in order to remain hydrated and healthy, but how many of us know the true value of water?
The average human being utilises approximately SIX HUNDRED litres of water every single day, or around 225 000 litres of water annually. While this may sound extreme, one must remember that we do not only use water to drink but also for food preparation, doing laundry, washing our vehicles, watering our gardens and more.
Water is also used to grow and manufacture our food and beverages; water is used for transportation, energy production, and the manufacturing of just about everything we eat, drink, wear or utilise in any way whatsoever – this makes water the lifeblood of any economy.
The water that you utilise at home is used on average as follows:
- showering – around 17%;
- Flushing the toilet – about 27%
- Taps – drain 15%
- Laundry takes 22%
- Miscellaneous use – 5% and
- Leaky taps and pipes – around 14%
We need water to provide us with power; this uses around 41% of water. Irrigation uses approximately 37% and irrigation and the transportation, treatment and pumping of water uses about 5% of energy produced.
Water is critical to communities where it is vital for personal use and also brings communities together in various ways, including in a recreational sense. Schools need thousands of litres of water daily; animal parks and zoos use water to care for the animals; sports teams need plenty of water, and lakes, rivers, streams, groundwater and underground aquifers and wells provide drinking water for communities.
The real value of water is that water is life and we cannot survive without it!
