While we all love the rainy season, especially after a drought, and crave listening to the pitter-patter of the rain, the rainy season can also bring with it the possibility of falling prey to a host of viral and bacterial infections, airborne diseases, seasonal allergies and mosquito-borne ailments.
Many of you may have noticed that your immune system seems to be rather vulnerable during the change of season, and you are correct – it is time to bolster your immune system by eating well, thereby ensuring that you guard against seasonal change. Added to this, according to Ayurvedic beliefs, drinking water can also make a world of a difference.
This is especially important if you live in an area where you experience monsoons, as according to Ayurveda expert Dr. Ashutosh Gautam, most ailments during monsoon occur due to infected water, and “during monsoon our body’s constitution becomes more air dominated which can cause Vatta imbalance. Digestive issues are therefore pretty common around this time of the year and that is why fried foods should be consumed in moderation.”
Tips for Drinking Water for Health
- It is best to drink clean water of course, but even if you do not have access to pure drinking water, using herbs like Nirmali in your drinking water can naturally detoxify it.
- It has long been known that drinking water stored in copper vessels or silverware is very healthy, and also provides you with an additional dose of minerals.
- Since digestive issues are rampant during monsoon, it is advisable that you drink warm water instead of ice-water, and always drink lukewarm water after a meal to promote digestion.
- Adding anti-bacterial and immunity boosting ingredients like ginger to your drinking water is also a good idea.
No matter the time of the year or where you live, it is better to sip your water rather than gulping it down in one go.
