The ongoing drought in South Africa has left millions without even drinking water for months on end; animals have died, people have died, and some have committed suicide. While the government is giving some help, it is the ordinary person on the street with the help of Business that is making the difference on the ground.
South Africans may have their political differences, but when it comes to a national tragedy such as this, they stand together. Millions of ordinary people have and still donating water by the litre and delivering it to hundreds of drop-off points countrywide for distribution to those who have none.
Convoys of trucks are leaving on virtually a daily basis, with the last convoy of 35 trucks having left for the North West with two thousand litres of water for those in need. Business is coming to the party with donations as well as with trucks and tankers to transport the water free of charge to wherever it is needed.
Donations have also been made via a crowdfunding initiative to Feed a Child’s #waterislife campaign to supply as many communities with water storage tanks so that larger volumes of water can be delivered more consistently and more readily so they can have a more sustainable water supply.
The #waterislife campaign aims to deliver seven steel water tanks of 24,000 litres to Viljoenskroon, Senekal, Winburg, Reddersburg, Wepener, Smithfield and Tosca as part of the Water Shortage South Africa water drive which is being run via Facebook and performing miracles.
It is this kind of care for our neighbours that South Africa is famous for, and which comes to the fore whenever there is a crisis. More often than not in the news for more nefarious reasons, this is the type of initiative that reaches into the hearts of most citizens, and gets ordinary citizens, school children, NGOs, and many more donating whatever they can and in many cases even what they cannot afford to help those in need.
Apart from drinking water, water for other uses, water for animals and feed for livestock is also making its way to those farmers in desperate need and who them elves helped out with drinking water for those without until their boreholes ran dry.
Remember, water is life, so use it sparingly and recycle wherever possible.
