For your body to function optimally you need to keep fit, keep your weight under control and drink lots of water. Ultimately, drinking water is actually the most important thing you can do to maintain good health, as your body cannot function without it.
Drinking water regularly helps your body in the following ways:
- Bloodstream – heat is exuded by our bodies via expanding blood vessels close to the surface of the skin, which results in a cycle of more blood flow. Drinking water regularly ensures that your body cools down quickly when it gets hot.
- Brain – Your brain is around 90% water, and it is most vital that this balance is maintained in order for the brain to send messages, stay motivated, maintain a stable mood and a sharp and clear memory. Good hydration keeps the brain sharp whereas dehydration causes reduced oxygen flow; shrink the neurons and a “fuzzy†brain.
- Heart – Dehydration lowers your blood volume, which means that your heart has to work harder to pump the thickened blood throughout your body, carrying vital oxygen and nutrients to every cell.
- Kidneys – Your kidneys are the filters of the body, making sure that waste from your blood is cleaned and excreted from the body in the form of urine. Drinking sufficient water helps the kidneys to perform their function optimally and prevents kidney stones and urinary tract infections. Not drinking sufficient water will lead to dehydration which will cause your kidneys to cease functioning, resulting in a build-up of toxins in your body.
Limbs – The water you ingest goes to both the inside and the outside of the cells of your muscles, ensuring that they get sufficient nutrients; it also removes waste and both cushions and lubricates your joints, ensuring that they can move easily and that they do not get injured if knocked.
Drinking water also keeps your mouth, throat and lips moist and keeps the largest organ in the body, your skin, from drying out and becoming flaky; dry skin also loses its elasticity gets wrinkled and makes you look older.
