A project by the not-for-profit water company, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, will see a £200,000 investment is set to get underway in parts of Llangennech to boost drinking water quality for customers in the area.
The project, which will take place in the fields between Talyclun and Penlan Farm, then continue towards Capel Ty-Newydd, Glyncaerau Cottage and Tyr-Fernel, will see all of the old, rusting iron water pipes replaced with brand new plastic pipes, which is set to improve the quality of the drinking water network in the area for decades to come.
Welsh Water’s Capital Delivery Project Manager, Dave Kirk said:
“With some parts of the water network laid many years ago, the time has come for us to undertake some essential work to replace the pipes. We are committed to providing customers with a first class supply and our work here reflects this.â€
“Although most of the work will take place in private land, there will be traffic control measures to reduce disruption within Gypsy Lane. This is essential to make sure the workmen, local residents and motorists stay safe during the work.
“We understand that a large refurbishment programme like this can cause disruption in the short-term, but the long term benefits include reduced leaks, less interruptions to supply and high quality drinking water for the whole community for decades to come,†he added.
Welsh Water’s RainScape tunnelling machine, named ‘Jarvis’ by Bigyn Primary School pupil Morgan Smith, has also begun the tunnelling work below the streets of Llanelli. The 1km tunnel, which will be connected by several tunnel access points, will remove surface water from Llanelli then return it to the environment as part of Welsh Water’s £20 million RainScape scheme, which is Welsh Water’s approach to managing surface water and reducing sewer flooding, by separating rain water from the existing system, slowing it down and redirecting it to local rivers and watercourses, and in some cases, removing it completely.
These two projects will see the area’s water much improved in many ways.
