Considering how important coral reefs are for the earth, mankind, and just about every living organism that resides on the earth, especially the 25% found inside the coral reefs, we’d say whatever it is they eat, is very important.
Since corals are known as the largest communal animals that are mostly related to jellyfish and anemones, their food must come in large quantities. Even though you can’t picture corals catching small animals or fish, that is exactly what they do.
They also use their stinging tentacles, which surrounds their body to both eat their food, and extract any waste they need to get rid of.
How do corals survive in aquariums and what do they eat?
Well, firstly, corals are kept in saltwater systems, where any toxins that might influence these incredible organisms, are balanced and kept under control.
In previous years, aquariums had many failed attempts to keep corals in Aquariums, but thanks to balancing out dangerous toxins, such as nitrates and phosphates, along with controlling trace minerals, corals have since been able to thrive in these incredible living aquatic aquariums.
What also allows corals to thrive in this artificial environment, is consuming the proper foods, which is specifically designated to individual species of coral, as most species can’t consume the same foods.
Since most species require specific food, that can only be found in their relative environments, it is almost nearly impossible to simulate the same foods in aquariums.
Most corals thus do not have specific feeding regimes, but instead receive the proper amount of nutrition from their tanks, with nutrient-dense food contained within their water.
These foods are generally very colorful, gets provided to them from a light source through photosynthesis and depending on their size, might require prey that are larger than macroscopic food sources.
