Most people only think about drinking water when they get hot and sweaty, as though that is the only time that one needs to drink water. Unfortunately that is where those individuals are very wrong; we need to drink water regularly, whether it is summer or winter and whether we are running a marathon or sitting behind a desk all day.
According to Dr. Mehmet Oz, the average person loses ten or eleven cups of water per day from sweating, breathing, and urinating. It is absolutely vital that these fluids be replaced as soon as possible in order to avoid getting dehydrated.
When the body gets dehydrated the body cannot get all the required nutrients to every cell and organ in the body, and waste and toxins can also not be cleared. Drinking water also helps to keep your skin looking plump, smooth and therefore younger, but when you do not drink sufficient water it gets dried out, flaky and wrinkly.
Drinking water helps keep the blood thin enough so that it can move easily throughout the body; regulates body temperature via sweating, supports digestion and lubricates the joints. Drinking water ensures that the heart and other muscles can easily do their work and ensures that your mucous membranes remain moist.
Easy Ways to Stay Hydrated
In stark contrast to the old “eight glasses of water per day†adage, the amount of water that you should drink per day depends on your own personal circumstances such as the amount of exercise that you do, the climate in which you live, your age, gender and various other factors. According to the Institute of Medicine, women should drink water regularly to ensure that they get at least 9 cups of fluids per day; some of the fluids can come from fruit, vegetables and other beverages but the majority of it should be good old water. Men require 13 cups.
While this sounds like a lot of fluid, remember you are actually just replacing what you are losing, and this can be done in various ways. Here are some of Dr Oz’s recommendations:
- Pace Yourself: Mark your water bottle in increments and then make sure that you drink water regularly and drink the prescribed amount in the time-frame you devised. Drink a certain amount before lunch and the rest between lunch and 6pm. This way you will stay wonderfully hydrated throughout the day.
- Keep it Cool: Keep your water cooler for longer by filling a water bottle quarter full and placing it in the freezer overnight and then filling it up the rest of the way in the morning; it will melt slowly during the day, keeping you in cool water all day at work. (Of course I have a much easier method for this; it is called a water cooler, and I can get fresh, tasty, pure, toxin-free, chilled drinking water any time I want at the press of a button.)
- Give It a Twist: Add a twist of lemon, lime, cucumber, orange, or a sprig of mint to your hot or cold drinking water for a tasty, healthy drink of water.
However you drink your water, make sure that you drink water throughout the day and don’t try to gulp it all down at once. Drinking water steadily is the best way to stay hydrated, and if you can persuade your boss to invest in an office water cooler for you and your colleagues then you REALLY have no excuse.
