Drinking water - why we need to preserve the oceansJoin us on the 8th June 2011 to celebrate World Oceans Day. In 2009 the UN declared the 8th of June World Oceans Day to raise consciousness of how our lives depend on oceans and to appreciate our marine life.

72% of our planet is made up of water and many countries started celebrating World Oceans Day following the UN conference on Environmental and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.

Our oceans are essential to food security and health and survival of all life. We take this day to raise awareness of current challenges our oceans face. Beach cleanups, educational programmes, art contests, film festivals, sustainable food events, etc. help to raise consciousness of how our lives depend on oceans.

The theme for 2011 is “Youth: The Next Wave for Change”. The aim is to challenge participants to view ocean protection as a way of life. Our youth are the most promising members of the public to reach out to. They are the most knowledgeable and motivated segment of the population when it comes to protecting the environment. Research has shown that parents are looking at their teenagers for advice and information regarding these issues.

We want to encourage individuals to start conserving our oceans for present and future generations. Our daily actions affect our ocean creatures and habitats. Whether you live inland or at the coast, we are all connected to the ocean.

Take time to think about how the ocean affects you and how you can affect the ocean.
