Believe it or not, but that fatigue and listlessness that you have been feeling at work, especially round the middle of the day could be because you are dehydrated.
Even though most of us know that we need to stay well hydrated, most of us neglect to drink the one liquid that dehydrates us the best and which our bodies desperately need to work efficiently – water!
Unfortunately most individuals think that being dehydrated is when you have been doing hectic physical work or exercise, have sweated a lot and not had something to drink for a long time. This is unfortunately not the truth -one can even get dehydrated just sitting behind your desk.
It does not take days without liquids to dehydrate one; even a slight dip in your body’s liquid balance is sufficient to cause mild dehydration, which can make us feel thirsty and impair our ability to work productively.
Researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College’s Brain and Mind Research Institute published a study in the Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow & Metabolism, found that even water loss of less than 5% of your body weight can cause problems such as decreased blood flow, which is required for proper neural activity. This in turn disrupts the blood vessels in the brain causing reduced cognitive performance in attention span, short-term memory, and reaction time.
Even though you may drink other liquids, remember that you can only get around 20% of your daily liquid requirements from water-rich fruit and veg and other liquids such as tea, coffee, and juices. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), men generally require need about 2.5 litres of water per day, and women need about 2.2 litres.
The rule of thumb is that you drink water first thing in the morning, regularly throughout the day, and last thing at night. You should also monitor your urine – the darker your urine is, the more dehydrated you are. Your urine should not be darker than a pale yellow.
