Most of us have heard by now that the human body consists of around 70% water and that we need to continually drink water throughout the day to maintain this balance. Most of us also know by this time that there is water in virtually every part of our body, and what it does.
One of the things that water does for us is that it helps our digestive system to operate more efficiently, but the question is whether it is good to drink water with our meals or not. Yes, the digestive system works well when well-hydrated, but does it work as well if over-hydrated as in hydrated when eating?
Too much water in your system during meals is not good as it can interfere with the natural levels of acid and bile in your stomach that are required to properly digest your food. This is particularly true of too much cold water during meals, which is mostly what individuals drink when eating.
Tips for Drinking Water with Meals
Generally one should avoid drinking water from about 15 minutes prior to eating a meal until at least one hour after. Applying the following will ensure that you remain hydrated while not flooding your body with water during mealtimes:
- Take Small Sips: If you prefer drinking water with your meal, you can just take small sips instead of forgoing it altogether. This way you can cleanse your palate and maintain hydration.
- Drink Warm Water not Cold Water: While most individuals prefer to drink cold or even iced water during meals, drinking warm water or even tea will help more with your digestion.
- Hydrate Prior to Eating: Drinking a glass of water around 15 to 30 minutes before you eat will ensure that you are hydrated and prevent the urge to drink during your meal.
Staying hydrated throughout the day will help you to not need to drink water while eating. Start your day by drinking a nice big glass of water first thing and continuing to drink water at regular intervals, ending off with a glass of water just prior to retiring for the night.
