After the Easter weekend, the death toll has risen to 60 people, which has occurred as a result of severe mudslides and floods in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
While most individuals who passed are adult, a baby as young as six months old has also died. In a statement, the President, Cyril Ramaphosa, has said that over a 1,000 people have also been misplaced in the region. He has tried to attend the funeral where seven people were buried.
Giving that its only April, extremely heavy rains have brought to light just how bad the winter may be this year. It’s been reported that there are a lot more days of flooding and increased winds to pick up in coastal areas around the country.
With the displacement of hundreds of people, floods have also damaged homes, businesses and two universities, which has also led to residents in the region to gather and support each other. Currently, officials are still assessing the situation as dozens of more people have also been taken the hospital, along with everybody else moved to safer areas.
Flood Victims Appeal for Help, Due to the Government Going Back on their Promise
Even though the government has started to help the victims of the flood, they are still not being attended to. Many Durban flood victims have taken shelter at community halls or have been forced to sleep on the floor.
Over 75 people are currently being housed at the Umlazi’s Q temporary shelter, which has reportedly been one of the worst affected areas in the region.
Meanwhile, residents are trusting Cyril Ramaphosa to step in, as he has pledged to fund and assist the survivors after enduring the disaster. Residents are now waiting for government aid to rebuild their homes.
