In this time of global water shortages as a result of rapid urban population growth, industrialisation and uncertainties caused by climate change, conflicts and natural disasters, it is up to all of us to save water where we can. If we do not, we may find ourselves in the same boat as the many countries currently experiencing devastating droughts; too little water for even normal domestic use, failing crops and business that are closing.
While this may all sound a bit daunting to the normal “man-in-the-street†it is not really that complicated and every one of us can do our bit to save water every day just by curtailing our water usage in our daily lives. This will not only save water, but will also save you loads on your water bill every month.
Easy Methods of Saving Water & Money
Apart from the usual fixing of leaky taps and replacing leaking water pipes, not over-watering your garden, capturing rainwater and recycling your domestic water into your garden and for washing your motor vehicle, there are also various other ways of saving water, such as:
Toilets: Toilets make up about 31% of overall household water consumption. The modern High Efficiency Toilets (HETs) and ultra-low-flow (ULF) toilets use only 4-6 litres-per-flush as opposed to pre 1995 models that use up to 13.6 litres per flush. This can translate into a saving of around 35 litres per person per day.
Showerheads: Showers are typically the third largest domestic usage of water after toilets and washing machines. The average person showers for around 8 minutes and uses around 65 litres of water. Installing a modern low-flow showerhead and shortening your shower time to 5 minutes will result in around 50% savings, and if you put the plug in while showering if your shower is over a bath, or stand in a large basin while showering, you can use the water to water the lawn or garden, thereby saving even more water.
As you can see, the above two methods alone can save a family thousands of litres of water per annum, and that will definitely make a difference in your water bill too.
