Is the idea published in an article in Springer’s journal Environmental Chemistry Letters by a researcher to curb air pollution using water a good one or not? One the one hand we need to conserve as much water as we possibly can because the world’s water supply is in dire straits and the human race cannot survive without water.
On the other hand, air pollution in places such as China is so bad that most people wear face masks whenever outside of their homes.
Curb Air Pollution Using Water
Shaocai Yu of Zhejiang University in China and North Carolina State University in the US is the researcher who suggested this innovative idea to curb air pollution. Yu suggested this novel approach to the heavy haze and severe air pollution in many Chinese cities and elsewhere around the world.
Yu’s idea to curb air pollution using water envisages water being sprayed into the atmosphere from sprinklers set atop towers and tall buildings. These sprinklers would work similar to watering a garden. According to Yu, this will simulate natural precipitation that is able to effectively collect and remove many of the aerosol and gaseous pollutants in the air.
Yu’s plan calls for the use of plain, chemical-free water to be used so that there are no side-effects of the falling water and so that the water can ultimately be recollected and recycled. This is very important as there are water shortages and water scarcity in many areas in China, and one cannot forgo drinking water or water required for personal hygiene, food preparation, or agricultural use in order to clean up the pollution.
Yu says this geo-engineering option is efficient, technologically feasible, natural, and low cost. Everything required to put this plan into practice is already available; towers, weather modification technology tall buildings, water, aircraft, and automatic sprinkler heads. Research and experiments are currently underway.
