Severn Trent invested in excess of £400,000 to replace nearly two-and-a-half miles of new supply mains water pipes around Coalville, Leicestershire as part of a replacement programme to replace older pipes with new ones.

Craig Viner, programme engineer, explained at the beginning of the project: “These pipes have done sterling work serving the locals of Coalville for many years but are now starting to come to the end of their useful life. As the pipes get older, they can be more likely to burst and cause problems for our customers. We really don’t want that, so we’re replacing them to give the locals a water supply they can trust for many years to come.”

Severn Trent contract partners Laing O’Rourke began work on the project in October 2016, but due to issues around the M1, which were having a knock-on effect on the company’s roadworks, a halt was called to all work while plans were made with Leicestershire County Council to get round those issues.

The work will now begin on 9th January in the town around Beveridge Lane and will move on to Bardon Road in February.

Mike Holder, programme engineer for Severn Trent, says: “We always want our customers to have a consistent, dependable water supply, so replacing the older pipes with new ones means they’ll experience fewer interruptions and still receive top quality drinking water.”

The next stage is set to begin in April, and the company will be working during Easter half-term to minimise any traffic disruptions. Work will begin at the Flying Horse Pub, in the direction of Charnwood Arms. There will be a lane closure on Shaw Lane and then various road and junction closures on Copt Oak Road and Stanton Road.

Holder apologised for any inconvenience caused by the works and promised to minimise disruption as much as possible while offering customers a great service going forwards.
