C40 Cities is a Climate Leadership Group, comprised of a network of global megacities committed to addressing climate change.
The group is now in its 10th year, and it serves to connect 75 of the greatest cities across the globe, representing in excess of 550million people and 25% of the global economy. The group seeks to unite these cities in one thought, and that is to tackle climate change and drive urban action that will make a difference in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks; this will automatically increase the health, wellbeing and economic opportunities of urban citizens.
While many others are still talking about doing something, and international negotiations do make some sort of progress, the C40 group of cities are actually doing something about tackling climate change. The mayors of the participant cities are hugely involved and are implementing policies and programs that are actually generating measurable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks.
Various events are held, with the Annual C40 Mayors Summit being held in various cities around the globe. Practitioner workshops are organised through C40’s Networks; and several high-profile thought leadership meetings are also held, including various regional gatherings and multilateral sessions co-located at major international events.
An annual awards ceremony is held to honour the cities that are doing the best in delivering innovative policies and programmes that are successful in reducing emissions and improving sustainability. The awards are also used to share lessons with other cities around the world.
The newly named ‘C40 Cities Awards’, will take place in the evening of December 3rd 2015 in Paris, to coincide the activities around COP21, and the focus will be on sharing highly replicable ‘best practices’ across cities and drawing attention to outstanding performances that have achieved a high level of environmental success under challenging circumstances.
The C40 Cities Awards are granted in 10 categories, four of which are open to C40 Cities and cities that have committed to the Compact of Mayors – Carbon Measurement & Planning, Adaptation Planning & Assessment, Building Energy Efficiency and Green Energy. The six remaining categories are open to all cities – Finance & Economic Development, Solid Waste, Adaptation Implementation, Smart Cities & Smart Community Engagement, Sustainable Communities and Transportation.
The City of Cape Town is one of three finalists in the Adaptation Implementation category, for its Water Conservation and Water Demand Management (WCWDM) Programme.
