The year 2018 has welcomed rain to Cape Town, which has left the city relieved for a while.

The winter months in the year 2019, has continued to provide the city and the entire province, the Western Cape, with an increase in rainfall, which has aided in the replenishment of dams throughout the province, which has even lead to the recovery of regions that haven’t seen rain for years.

Even though the Western Cape province has been relieved thus far, it still faces many obstacles when it comes to water and the struggles paired with it.

That is why the City Council of Cape Town has approved a Water Strategy on the 30th of May 2019, which furthermore, raised awareness among the residents in the Mother City.

The Cape Town Water Strategy 2019

The water strategy of 2019 promotes awareness around the ongoing water crisis in the Western Cape, which now, hasn’t been as supported by residents as it has during the last few years.

Since the province has been relieved with rainfall, residents have strayed away from supporting the water crisis.

The new water strategy emphasizes the importance of water and has a goal to prevent a future Day Zero. The water strategy will aim to follow water relief practices and preventions, which are like that of cities in Australia, as well as Singapore.

Although there have always been water management strategies set in place for the sustainability of water, day zero has pushed the City of Cape Town and the City Council to act on the water struggle, which although maintained now, is set to become an extremely water sensitive city within the next two decades.

The water strategy thus, will focus on the provision and access to safe water and sanitation, educating and implementing strategies on how to use water wisely, providing reliable sources of water from different sustainable sources, and overall, prevent the prediction that Cape Town is set to become a water sensitive city by the year 2040.
