While office water coolers have become more popular over the past few decades and virtually every office now has one, home water coolers have been slow to take off, and personally I always thought that people who had home water coolers were just being a wee bit pretentious.
Well, I USED to think that – until I house-sat for a friend while she was away – in the heat of and African summer. She had this fantastic little water cooler in her downstairs lounge/family room which led off onto the entertainment area and pool, and let me tell you, I made major use of that water cooler over the three weeks that I lived there.
What I loves about having a water cooler at home was the fact that it was so convenient to just press a lever and draw a tall glass of icy cold, great-tasting, refreshing water after being out in the sun or when coming home from a day at the beach or a jog. There was no need to juggle things around in the fridge to make space for a jug of water, and no need to run the cold water tap until the water was cool enough to drink.
Best of all, when I had friends over for a New Year’s pool party, we never ran out of iced water which some people were drinking as is and others were using to mix with their fruit juice or alcoholic drinks – and it was also greatly appreciated the next morning…
Something that surprised me is that her water cooler also had ambient and hot water options, and I found myself using it to make the morning coffee instead of waiting for the kettle to boil – can’t wait for the next time that I house-sit, which is going to be in winter.
While I have not invested in a home water cooler yet because I am hardly ever at home, when my work schedule changes and I spend more time at home I will most definitely make sure that a home water cooler is one of my first purchases.
