In case anyone missed it, plastic pollution is a real problem, and it’s affecting our environment more and more each passing day. There is currently an incredible amount of plastic residing in the ocean today, along with different forms of packaged waste.
It’s hard to believe that an approximately 18-billion pounds of plastic makes its way into the beautifully pristine blue oceans via beaches all around the globe. All the plastic that enters the ocean has an increasingly negative and harmful effect on creatures in the ocean. Plastic effects coral reefs that get caught and even smothered in large pieces of plastic or plastic bags, fish gag on straws and birds die as they cannot process plastic. When plastic enters a marine animals’ body, it immediately affects the functioning of their bodily system, which places pressure on their cardiovascular and respiratory systems, to help them survive. Soon after, they usually die.
How to act on plastic pollution
It’s clear that one person can’t stop plastic pollution entirely. In fact, not even a hundred people can, but we can make a significant impact by making small changes and stand together to fight the act of littering on and around our beaches, rivers, streams and creeks.
Since 40% of all plastic that is produced is used for packaging, companies can also stand together and make a difference by switching to another sustainable material source to package their products.
Say no to plastic when you see it
The only way to stop plastic from entering our oceans is to prevent the mass manufacturing thereof.
Since up to half of all plastic is made for the packaging of products and goods, one thing you can do, is to commit to not purchase anything that is either wrapped up in plastic or consists of plastic.
When you purchase food items, ensure that it is packaged sustainably and when you see someone litter, give that man a pep talk. Establishing groups of individuals to clean up beaches regularly could also prevent plastic from entering the ocean at the rapid pace.
