Access to Clean Water Changes LivesHave you ever been in a position to not have access to fresh, clean water for a lengthy period of time? If you have, then you will understand that not being able to turn on the tap and have lovely fresh, clean, potable water flow out can cause all sorts of problems.

Just think about it; need to wash your hands? Oops sorry, no water; need to wash the dishes? Oops sorry, no water; need to prepare and cook some veggies? Oops sorry, no water; Dying for a cup of tea or coffee? Oops sorry, no water; want to take a shower, bathe, wash your hair, water the plants, flush the toilet? Oops sorry, no water!

Access to clean, potable water is vital to both children and adults; it keeps children healthy so they can go to school and become educated so that they can have good careers and it keeps adults healthy so they can work, earn an income and support their families. Access to clean, potable water also helps entire communities to move out of poverty.

I recently watched a video about Boniface, an energetic 13-year-old Kenyan boy who is a leader in his school and in his community and who, together with his sister, attends the Gobei Primary School in Bondo, a rural region near Lake Victoria.

Boniface was elected to be the chairperson of his school’s health club, which educates students on how to wash their hands properly, the importance of sanitation and general hygiene, and on how to using the P&G Purifier of Water packets that are made available by the P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Programme.

Boniface may still be a young lad, but he is a change-agent, and proudly stated, “When the P&G Purifier of Water was not there, we had a huge number of absenteeism. But nowadays, we don’t miss our studies because we treat the water. We drink it, now we don’t miss our subjects.”

While it is great to see Boniface and his classmates so healthy and so involved in making an impact on others in their community, there are still so many areas where access to clean water and sanitation is not available to rural communities who die like flies from water-related diseases, and so much still to do to ensure that the basic right to clean water is afforded to all human beings.
