Fun fact, apparently it costs $100 million to transport an iceberg from Antarctica to the shores of Cape Town, South Africa. That not all even. In addition to that, it will also cost between $50-60 million for what’s to come thereafter.
How would we know that? Well, it’s a project that is possibly going to be launched soon.
With the water crisis seeming as though it has come to an end, or well, at least in Cape Town for now, what’s to come in the future is completely uncertain. Hence the option for an alternative water supply is required.
It sounds crazy, moving an iceberg across the ocean to another country, yet a similar process has already been done by Russia.
Russia has just recently, managed to push icebergs from their oil installations, but only small ones. These were only around half a million tons in weight, while the one that Cape Town hopes to reserve for themselves, is 100 million tons in weight.
Options to solve a problem
As said, the stroke of luck Cape Town’s has had during its autumn and winter months with its rainfall, is something we’re hoping will come around each year, but just in case it doesn’t, alternative resources needs to be looked at.
Cape Town has already considered building seawater desalination plant and has already issued strict instructions to the city’s residents regarding the amount of water they’re allowed to use but being presented with the towing-of-the-iceberg option, still remains unclear.
Studies have also been done to establish how groundwater and desalination options are cheaper to implement, which leaves authorities and the government with a decision to act between the two options.
Yes, moving an iceberg from another continent to South Africa is completely crazy, but it is possible, and while it won’t solve the future problem of drought in Cape Town, it will allow for 20-30% of the city’s needs to be met.
Regardless of whether Russia towed smaller icebergs before, this would be the first iceberg towed to a country, for the use to provide drinking water to a nation.
