Although 100% of Italy’s urban population and 97% of its rural population have access to water, in all its perfection, there is an immense water crisis on the rise.
With 70% of the country’s population having access to sanitation, you might think it’s a good percentage and far more than other countries around the world. Water supply, however, has become restricted and a big problem in cities and regions such as Sicily, Sardinia, Apulia and Basilicata.
This is mainly due to an increase in population and the water demand simply being too high. Over the years, there has also been a lack of management when it comes to water conservation, which is a pretty big problem as cities like Cape Town in South Africa, lack of management regarding water is what caused water stress and drought in the first place.
It is believed that, if something is not done to conserve water resources in Italy now, water stress would increase to up to 25% in this century alone. This is a major problem, and not only in Italy but the entire world. Could we actually imagine that our children or children’s children could grow up in a world with water crisis everywhere? Will that be the reality if governments do not take the necessary action today? This is one problem we should all work towards finding a solution for. It’s detrimental to human and life existence, to say the least.
