There is nothing more important to any human being than water. We need food too obviously, but we can go for far longer without food than we can go without water.
Apart from using water for drinking in order to keep our bodies hydrated and healthy, we also use water for personal hygiene, for food preparation and cooking, for doing the laundry, for washing the dishes, for agriculture, for power, for transport, and for industry.

Running the tap to get the water cool or while you are brushing your teeth wastes another 7.5 litres of water and if you use an automatic dishwasher, there goes another 40 litres.
All it takes to save water is a little bit of foresight; fill a glass with water with which to rinse your mouth after brushing instead of letting the tap run, and put a brick in the cistern of your toilet to minimise the amount of water it takes for each flush. When rinsing fruit or veg, do so over a container placed in the sink and use that water for your plants instead of letting it run down the drain. Invest in a water cooler so that you always have fresh, filtered, chilled drinking water instead of letting the tap run cool.
