Most of us living in modern society can access clean, hygienic drinking water by merely turning on the tap.
This water has been sourced and treated by local government or municipal waterworks to ensure that it is clean and germ-free.
In this we are very fortunate, far more fortunate than millions of people living in developing countries where access to potable drinking water is not guaranteed and even when there is, it is often not easily accessible.
What Would You Do If Your Main Water Supply Were Infected With Bacteria?
What would happen if suddenly for some reason your supply of drinking water were infected by some or other bacteria?
It is very difficult for bacteria to enter the drinking water supply because these systems are designed to prevent this from happening. Typically, water systems pump water from rivers or lakes, remove the sediment in settling tanks, filter the water and then decontaminate with ozone, chlorine and/or ultraviolet light to kill any remaining bacteria.
Although it is difficult for bacteria to enter the water system, it can happen, as it did in Milwaukee in 1993, for instance. In this case, protozoa called cryptosporidium entered the water system, resulting in the deaths of dozens of individuals and almost half a million individuals getting ill.
Constant, careful monitoring of the water systems’ purification processes normally prevent bacteria from getting into your drinking water, but is you are concerned, or if it does, get a water filter. Water filters will prevent bacteria from entering your drinking water, as will a water cooler fitted with a water filter.
Office water coolers and home water coolers are affordable, can be customised to suit you interior decor or company colours, and come in various models. Both types of water coolers come in different styles and models. Bottled water coolers consist of an inverted water bottle on top of a water cooling system are more suited to smaller spaces. Point-of-use (POU) water coolers are plumbed into the main water system; they are suited to offices, sports complexes and wherever many people need to be serviced.
