Some Important Tips on Staying HydratedAccording to famous heart surgeon Dr Mehmet Oz’s Hydration Handbook, it is vital that we ensure that we remain fully hydrated at all times because virtually every system in the human body needs water to function at peak levels.

This means that we need to drink water regularly throughout the day because the body cannot store water and loses it throughout the day via urination, tears, coughing, sweating, and even just breathing.

Dehydration can lead to various serious, life-threatening medical conditions such as stroke, cancer, diabetes, and more. We often miss the warning signs of dehydration because modern life is so hectic, so it is best to start the day off with a nice glass of water and drink water throughout the day as well just to be sure.

Forgetting to drink water on a regular basis can lead to:

  • Thirst and a dry mouth: When your mouth is dry and you feel thirsty, your body is already around 2-5% dehydrated and if you do not drink water at this stage it can lead to further problems.

  • Bladder Infections: When you do not drink enough water, your kidneys cannot filter out the toxins which then remain in your bladder and can cause infections and even bladder cancer.

  • Dizziness: The human brain is around 90% water, and if it gets dehydrated this could lead to dizziness, because the body moves water to where it is needed when you are dehydrated and sudden movements like standing up will cause the little water that is in your body to move away from your heart and your brain.

The best way to ensure that you remain fully hydrated at all times is to remember that your body needs water to function, even if you drink coffee, tea and juices throughout the day because although coffee contains water, it is a diuretic, which means that it increases the flow of urine, making your body more dehydrated. It is therefore recommended that you drink one glass of water per coffee or tea that you drink.

Another way in which you can ensure that you get sufficient water in your body is to eat water-rich fruit and vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, watermelon, celery, cucumber, blueberries, apples and oranges.
