When I say that we are all connected by water I do not just mean that because we are all born out of the water in our mothers’ wombs, or because we all have around 70% water in our bodies, but because our connection to the sacred element of water informs, inspires and activates our relationship to life itself.
It is deep within all of us to gravitate towards water in some way or the other, whether it be walking in the gentle cleansing rain, swimming in the ocean or in a pool, surfing, sailing, water-skiing, or skiing on the slopes of a snow-covered mountain.
Water at once both delights and terrifies most of us – we love to watch a meandering river as it gently laps at our feet, or stare out across the horizon at the sun sinking below the sea dreaming of what could be, but are terrified at the thought of being at sea during a storm and get a major adrenaline-high from white-water rafting or zooming down steep slopes on our skis.
When we think of outer space and the possibility of humans living on another planet at some time in the near future, the first thing we wonder about is whether there is water on the planet or not. Ask any surfer what it is about the ocean that enthrals him and he will tell you that it is the pulse of energy that a wave emits as a swell begins and ripples across the surface of the ocean; that riding this wonder of nature at its peak is a magical experience.
Think of how many of our legends and myths are around water; from the Selkies of the Celts to the Kraken of Scandinavia, Sirens and Mermaids, tall tales of sea-monsters and the Loch Ness monster, tales of Jonah and the whale, and even movies that enthral and scare us like Jaws.
Water is in us and all around us, and it calls to all of us in some way or the other, human animal and plant life would not exist were it not for water. Whether it is drinking water or water used for agriculture or energy, water is life-giving and life-sustaining, so let us look after this most precious commodity.
