Roundup in Drinking Water Harms Human Endocrine SystemAccording to a study conducted by researchers from Flinders University in Australia last year, the levels of the herbicide Roundup allowed in drinking water could be very dangerous as it causes damage to the human endocrine system.

The study found that Roundup levels currently permitted in Australian drinking water kills the cells responsible for producing progesterone in women.

Roundup is a widely used herbicide and often enters the drinking water from runoff from farms. Most governments allow a certain percentage of “safe” Roundup to be in the drinking water that you and I get from our taps every day, but this new study says even those levels are not safe.

The study was conducted on human chorioplacental JAr cells, which synthesise the hormone progesterone, and researchers found that Roundup and pure glyphosate both caused JAr cell death at concentrations similar to the maximum percentage allowed in Australian drinking water. The corresponding drop in synthesis of progesterone proved that glyphosate does indeed act as an endocrine disruptor.

While it was previously assumed that it is the glyphosates that are toxic, other tests wherein cells were exposed to Roundup showed that more JAr cells died than when exposed to glyphosate alone, which means that the herbicide’s non-glyphosate ingredients are biologically active. This is in direct contrast to the assumption by most regulatory frameworks that it is only the “active ingredients” that are unsafe, and calls for testing of all ingredients, not only the active ones.

The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IACR) has also eventually stated that glyphosate is a “probable” carcinogen after evidence from animal studies linked the chemical to various forms of cancer. Human studies have also linked Roundup to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in findings published in the journal Lancet Oncology.

While these lethal and toxic pesticides can be found in other places, such as on our produce, it is the presence of them in our drinking water that is of the most concern as fruit and veg generally gets washed and cooked, but what does that help if they are getting washed and cooked in the same water that contains the toxin?

One method of ensuring that you do not get any of these toxins in your system is to get a good water filter on your tap or a whole-house filtration system and invest in a water cooler with a good filter for your drinking water.
