Conserving water in and around the home is vital to ensure that we have sufficient water in the future, as we are currently facing global water-scarcity due to global warming and an ever increasing population explosion.
There are many ways in which Business can effect water-saving, but we cannot rely only on the government or Business to save water; each of us needs to do our bit too.
More Ways to Conserve Water In and Around the Home
One of the biggest wasters of water in the home is your washing-machine. Running the washing machine with only a half-load utilises and wastes too much water. Using the permanent press cycle adds 20 litres of water per load. It is also better to use more modern washing machines such as the new Energy Star rated ones which use 35 – 50% less water and 50% less energy per load.
Virtually the same goes for automatic dishwashers; you should not rinse your dishes before washing them, as that is just a waste of water, and they should be fully loaded for optimum water-conservation.
Double-sinks are the best to have in a kitchen, as you can then fill one with water for washing and the other with water for rinsing instead of rinsing them under a running tap, which can waste a lot of water. If you only have a single sink, install a spray device with which to rinse if possible, or use a basin of hot water to rinse them off.
We all like to rinse our vegetables and fruit to make sure they are toxin-free and clean, but instead of doing this under a running tap, use a container and then pour the water out into your garden or use to water house-plants.
Instead of running the cold water tap until the water is the correct temperature to drink thereby wasting water, invest in a water cooler that can provide filtered, chilled, great-tasting water virtually non-stop. Even better, invest in a mains water cooler that can provide chilled, ambient and hot water so that you will have access to water for chilled as well as hot drinks.
