Water fluoridation is a practice that is carried on by governments all over the world, in an effort to reduce dental cavities in children, especially amongst the poorer communities who may not have access to good dental healthcare.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control, water fluoridation is one of the ten greatest public health achievements of the 20th century, which numerous 15-year studies have concluded reduces tooth decay in children by an average of around 60%.
However, countless individuals, including scientists and those in the medical fraternity have spoken out against the “unsanctioned mass medication†of individuals since the inception of water fluoridation in the 1940s.
Does Fluoridated Water Make You Fat and Depressed?
Questions have arisen as to whether fluoridation is safe for other parts of the body; fluoride poisoning can result in adverse reactions such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea, as well as in weakened bones. There are also studies that contend that fluoride in the drinking water causes bone cancer, especially in young boys.
While many countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, the US and Australia are still adding fluoride to the drinking water, others such as Sweden, Finland, Japan, the Netherlands and Germany, have discontinued the practise.
A new study conducted by researchers from the University of Kent has added to the controversial addition of fluoride to the drinking water by analysing data from approximately 8,000 general practitioners’ offices, which is 98% of the practices in the UK.
The study found that those patients in areas with high levels of fluoride in the water have a 30 % higher chance of having an underactive thyroid. The research team says that this means that up to 15,000 British citizens could be experiencing hypothyroidism due to fluoride exposure, which manifests as depression, fatigue, low body temperature, and weight gain.
The key to a healthy thyroid is iodine, which we get from eating dairy products, eggs, seafood, seaweed, and iodised salt. The iodine is absorbed through the blood and stored and regulated by the body in the thyroid gland, but fluoride is more electronegative than iodine, therefore displaces the iodine in the body, disrupting thyroid function and impacting on the hormone levels that keep the metabolism in check.
