Water Filtration versus Water Addition - Should the Nanny state be making our decisions for us?It all seems to be happening in Hampshire. Having introduced Fluoridisation of tap water some time ago a senior Southampton councillor has confirmed that the city council would never have backed fluoridation if it had known what it knows now.

Deputy leader Cllr Royston Smith said new survey results, which show the city’s five-year-olds suffer the same amount of tooth decay as those across England, have dramatically weakened the case for fluoridation.

The main thrust was the poor state of dental health in Southampton, and that’s now shown not to be the case,” he said. “That, combined with the overwhelming public opposition and will of the people should be enough for the SHA to rethink their plans and abandon them.”

Basically it has now been shown, that dental health in the area was actually better before the program than an area like Birmingham which was supposedly benefitting from a long standing fluoridisation program. This poured cold water on the claimed health benefits of tampering with tap water by adding fluoride.

The outcry has been such that cooler companies like ourselves have been inundated by enquiries in the Hampshire area as anxious mothers aware of the risks and dangers of the plan, prefer not to entrust their children’s welfare to a bureaucratic nanny state imposing decisions on them.

Though the cooler industry has clearly benefitted from this muddled Big Brother thinking, we at Living-Water remain steadfastly against fluoridisation – If the government were to wish to extract from water (water filtration) that would be one thing and even then very debatable.  For example, out bottling plant uses two filters, one a sponge type filter changed every 3 months and acts to remove large particles.  The spring water then goes through a second 1 micron filter to remove bacteria.

As a spring water we cannot filter the water any more than 1 micron as we need and want the other bacteria without which we would not build up immunities. It’s a little like the debate about mouthwashes which many dentists like to sell and promote. Yes they make your husbands breadth smell good, but at what cost?  The mouth not only has bad bacteria but also good and by using mouthwash one kills both sets of bacteria – hence my doctor is against and wifey’s not happy.

This seems to me to be what I call the “Daily Mail” circle – for every article extolling the health benefits of a certain product/procedure there is another dispelling it.

I nearly fell of my sunlounger on holiday when I read that the Daily Mail now reported a study that says drinking water is not necessary – Sorry, that is just crazy, I have seen the benefits for myself and my family of drinking water and they are indisputable – what a crazy, crazy and misleading article and what gives some doctor/scientist the right to come out with one study dispelling the thousands of studies that show otherwise.  Information overload at its worst. Types of water treatment in the UK should be standardized and all consumers should have access to the best water to drink.

Lets all support improved drinking water standards and please write to your MP expressing your mistrust of fluoridisation.
