While the media is full of advertisements for green teas, antioxidants, herbal teas and the latest diets for healthy living, very little is written about the benefits of drinking water for a healthy body, yet water is by far the most critical liquid the human body needs for good health and optimal functioning.
As a baby, our bodies are 75 to 80% water; this percentage drops to around 70% water as adults and gets even lower as we get older, to approximately 50 to 60% for women and 60 to 65% for men. This water is spread throughout the body in more or less constant percentages as follows:
- Bones contain 31% water;
- Kidneys contain around 79% water.
- Muscles are 79% water;
- Our heart is approximately 73% water;
- The human brain is 85% water; and
- The skin is 64% water.
Every single system in the human body depends on water, including the digestive system, respiratory system, lymphatic system, the core body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure, so it is vital to remain hydrated at all times.
How to Stay Hydrated and Healthy
There are basically three ways to ensure that you are always fully hydrated and healthy and able to function at your best:
- Fruits: Eating water-rich fruits such as grapefruit, oranges, and melons like cantaloupe and honeydew or watermelon which is 90% water, can make up a portion of your daily fluid requirement.
- Vegetables: There are also various vegetables that are rich in water such as tomatoes, green peppers, celery, cucumbers, and Romaine lettuce, which is another reason why eating salads regularly is a good idea.
- Hidden Sources of Water: Other hidden sources of water are to be found in yoghurt, oatmeal, soup, and smoothies.
- Liquids: Milk, teas, coffee, juices, and sports drinks also make up part of your daily liquid requirements, but plain water, good old H20 should make up the majority of your daily liquid intake in order to remain fully hydrated and afford your body the nutrients it requires.
Begin your day with a large glass of water on an empty stomach in order to kick-start your system and hydrate after a long night without liquids. Drink water several times throughout the day as well, and remember to drink more if it is hot or you are physically active.
