Water cooler - the effect of wind on water retentionThis event occurs annually worldwide on the 15th June. It is a day when you can visit wind farms, meet experts, attend events and learn about wind energy. The day started as a European day and went global in 2009. Thousands of public events are organized worldwide.

Wind farms are in operation in more than 75 countries around the world, generating energy from a clean source. For many wind energy is still a mystery.

Wind Energy:

  • Emits no greenhouse gasses or pollution
  • Produces electricity without fuel
  • Not necessary to use water for cooling
  • Reduces dependence on fuel imports
  • Oil and gas prices go up; WIND IS FREE!!!
  • Creates thousands of local sustainable jobs
  • Wind energy is fast expanding in Europe

Facts:

How does a wind turbine work?

  • It captures the energy of moving air (wind) and converts to electricity
  • Have 3 aerodynamically designed blades
  • These blades spin a shaft which connects to a generator that produces electricity
  • In 2009 in Europe wind energy avoided 106 million tones of carbon dioxide, equivalent to taking  25% of cars in Europe off the road, that is enough to power 82 million electric cars

Organise your event:

  • Raise public awareness of wind energy
  • Wind is one of the key solutions to the energy crisis and climate change
  • Demonstrate that wind energy is a solution that is already working
  • Recent activities include: wind farm open days, wind power exhibitions, photo and art competitions, bicycle tours and running races, educational activities for young people

Organizing these events brings wind to people and people to the wind. Global Wind Day is coordinated by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEEC).
